7th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies Information

Language Arts: Students will use the Springboard curriculum again this year. My intent is to give students assignments they can finish in a class period if they use their time well. Assignments that are not completed in class will not usually be accepted. If I see that many students did not complete an assignment in class, and they were working steadily, I’ll adjust my expectations. Final essays will affect trimester grades and can be started early. (See Springboard workbook).

Social Studies: Social Studies will be using Discovering Our Past:  A History of the World (Middle Era) and Washington State History textbook.  Students will be reading, writing, talking and reflecting on a daily basis and class participation is crucial for the successful completion of this course. My intent is to give students assignments they can finish in a class period if they use their time well. Assignments that are not completed in class will not usually be accepted. If I see that many students did not complete an assignment in class, and they were working steadily, I’ll adjust my expectations. Students who do not pass Washington State History will have to take the class again and pass it to graduate from high school.

    Policies and Procedures:

    • Homework:The expectation for homework is students read every night.
    • Grading guidelines:The Tribe will follow the Mukilteo School District Grading Policy.  The grading scale is:  100-95= A: 94-90=A-: 89-87=B+: 86-84+ B: 83-80+ B- 79-77=C+ 76-74=C: 73-70=C-: 69-64=D+: 63-60=D: 59-0=F. Students can check their grade on Qmlative.

    • Progress Reports: Scores will be posted on a regular basis. Students are expected to look at their grades on Qmlative and, if necessary, plan a strategy for improving their grades.  School-wide progress reports go home at mid-trimester.

    • Late Work: The expectation is students complete work when it is assigned. My intent is to give students assignments they can finish in class if they use their time well. Assignments that are not completed in class will not usually be accepted. If I see that many students did not complete an assignment in class, and they were working steadily, I’ll adjust my expectations.

    • Absent Students: Class attendance is very important. If students are absent it is their responsibility to get the missed assignments. Students should ask me for assignments they missed.

    • On-time Arrival: Tardy students disrupt the learning environment—especially at the beginning of the school day. Please make an effort to always be on time.

    • Make Your Day: Every student has the right to learn and be safe without interference. Make Your Day procedures are followed on a consistent basis. When there is a guest teacher in the room, any student whose name is written down for not meeting expectations will be given an automatic step 4 conference

    Common expectations:

    1. In hallways, students will use “hushed voices” during transitions.
    2. No backpacks in class after lockers are assigned.
    3. All classes will have the same expectations for classroom behavior: raising hand to talk, not leaving seat at inappropriate times, having school supplies, and sharpen pencils before class begins.
    4. “Make Your Day” will be used as the primary citizenship program for Voyager.
    5. Healthy snacks and clear liquids are allowed in each classroom. Healthy snack examples are: veggies, fruit, granola bars, dry cereal bags, string cheese, etc.  Water is an acceptable drink. Candy, chips, soda and coffee will NOT be permitted.
    6. All students are REQUIRED to sign out to use the restroom.
    7. All students are REQUIRED to carry their reading book with them to every class.

Communication: Please contact me when you feel you need more information or would like me to have more information. Preferred method of contact is email.  Our team values parent/guardian input.  We encourage you to sign up for Qmlative where you can get up to date information regarding your child’s grades, attendance, and assignments.  The planner your child has also works as a great source of information. We expect all students to self-advocate for their needs and wants. Please encourage this at home.
