Pathfinder Kindergarten Center

  • Construction has been completed on Pathfinder Kindergarten Center, which is located behind Fairmount Elementary on Beverly Park Road. The school was completed on time for the start of school in September 2017. Pathfinder provides learning facilities for five- and six-year-old kindergarten students.

In designing Pathfinder Kindergarten Center, the architects at DLR Group of Seattle had to take into account current research on the design of learning spaces for young children. While it is a fairly large school with about 500 students, the building is broken down into four smaller schools to reduce the scale of the building for the young children and increase their feeling of belonging. Each group of classrooms has its own eating space, for example, so students aren’t intimidated by a large cafeteria.

The interior design is intentionally appealing to small children and their curiosity and, because movement is associated with effective learning among young students, the school features a variety of play and movement spaces. The floors also are heated to make them comfortable to sit on.

The contract for constructing the new Pathfinder Kindergarten Center was awarded to BNCC, Inc. of Steilacoom, Washington.
