6th to 7th Grade Math Placement Info
Dear Mukilteo School District 6th Grade Families,
You and your student have the opportunity to request math placement in either a Standard 7th grade math class or Advanced 7th grade math class. The purpose of a math placement decision is to provide course level work where learners are challenged, but not overly stressed.
Given the past year of remote learning, students are encouraged to register for the Standard 7th grade math if currently enrolled in a Standard 6th grade math class. Most students are appropriately challenged by the Standard 7th grade math course and are prepared for advanced math courses during high school.
The Standard 7th grade math class covers all 7th grade math concepts in one school year. The Advanced 7th grade math class covers all 8th grade math concepts and half of the 7th grade math concepts in one school year. The advanced math courses in middle school cover math concepts at a faster pace while maintaining complex thinking and problem solving.
- If your student is currently enrolled in the Advanced 6th grade math course, you have the option to continue in Advanced 7th grade math or select Standard 7th grade math.
- If your student is currently enrolled in Standard 6th grade math, you have the option to continue in Standard 7th grade math or select Advanced 7th grade math.
The decision to opt into the Advanced 7th grade math course from a Standard 6th grade math course should be carefully made and with thoughtful consideration of the impacts. It is important to be aware that many of the 7th grade foundational math concepts would be missed by students who move from Standard 6th grade to Advanced 7th grade math class. Students may end up with gaps in their understanding of math concepts which affect later success in high school math courses.
Please fill out the form linked below to submit your request for either Standard 7th grade math or Advanced 7th grade math for your current 6th grade student.
