Class Newsletter 12/4/2020
Hello Olivia Park Families!
Reading – Next week, we begin our 4th unit of the reading curriculum. This unit has students use wondering/questioning to help them understand fiction. They learn to think about whether their questions about the stories are answers directly, indirectly, or not at all by the text. In addition, they continue to practice visualizing and making inferences. During IDR (independent daily reading), students continue to practice using these strategies and confer with the teacher individually about their reading.
Writing- This week be start by selecting a Personal Narratives to take through the remaining steps of the writing process. Students will type their writing in a shared google doc. Over the next few weeks students will learn how to revise and edit their stories. Finally, they will publish and share their revised stories the week of December 14th. Students will be assessed on their Personal Narrative. You may support students in typing but allow students to create this narratives independently.
Math- Unit 2 will conclude the week of December 14th. The next unit scheduled is Unit 4. This unit will focus on activities that help them understand place value, rounding, and addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers.
Daily assignments- Reading, Writing and Math assignments and discussions are posted. If your child has not yet completed and/or submitted work, please remind them to complete schoolwork daily allowing for flexibility and breaks. Posted work is due the Sunday at midnight to allow time to complete before the new week begins. Students should expect to read every day at least 30 minutes. Raz-kids and Epic are reading resources if you need additional reading material.
Check out LIBRARY BOOKS: Students in grade 3-5 can request books by placing titles on hold using the library catalog or fill out a book request form. They do not do both. If they know what books they would like, then they use the catalog. If they need recommendations, they use the request forms. This is the link to the catalog: https://library.mukilteo.wednet.edu/district/servlet/presentlistsitesform.do?districtMode=true
This is the link to the 3-5 book request from: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc5289V4p_Lnep5Ec9bxVdBWiE8EIM3P2DA1xwbSbdw3W646g/viewform
How to access this has been shows during specialist learning time and it is also posted in the library Schoology courses. If you would like to see it again, here is the course link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GskItI1ZE8LCIUe97-sy1vkAIij12-ZT/view
Parent access to Schoology- Currently, Schoology does not have an effective way for teachers to show student’s missing work to parents. However, there is a way for parents to check on assignments and see what your child has been working on (or not working on). Please check weekly or more often, so you know what work is needed. Here is a link with instructions and Schoology features to allow you to do that.
