Jan. 2, 2022 Family message
Mukilteo schools will start two hours late tomorrow, Monday, January 3, and school buses will operate on normal routes. The late opening of school also means that morning preschool classes have been canceled, zero-period classes have been canceled, morning classes at the Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center have been canceled and ECEAP classes have been canceled. There will be no out-of-district transportation.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation and update staff and families by 6 a.m. tomorrow. Afternoon and evening events activities may be held as scheduled if conditions improve. Information about the status of those events will be announced later in the day.
School district facilities and grounds crews worked over Winter Break and Sunday to clear the snow and ice from parking lots, bus loading and unloading areas, and campus walking areas. With the rain’s help today, they made excellent progress. Staff members also evaluated the roads tonight to assess their condition and found them to be improved.
There remain some areas of concern. It may be difficult for students to walk in snow and slush that cover the sidewalks and walking routes in some neighborhoods. We ask that you use extra care when traveling to and from school tomorrow and we urge you to discuss additional safety precautions with your child, such as where he or she should safely walk or wait for the school bus. Please also use caution in school parking lots.
COVID-19 updates
Although the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently changed their recommendations for COVID isolation and quarantine, the Washington State Department of Health and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction have not yet updated their guidance for K-12 schools. We have been directed by state and local health departments to continue following current isolation and quarantine protocols until new local guidelines for K-12 schools are issued.
Reporting positive cases in students
If your student tested positive for COVID-19 on December 27 or after, please keep them home from school on January 3 and call your school to report the information and determine their return date.
Please continue to closely monitor for symptoms and stay home if you or your student have any of the symptoms below:
- Fever (100.4 or greater)
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Sudden loss of taste or smell
- Diarrhea or abdominal pain
- Unusual fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
In-district transfer requests begin online tomorrow
Families seeking a school transfer within the school district for the 2022-23 school year, should complete the online request form on the district website. The requests are considered in the order they are received. Please note that many schools are closed to transfers because they are already at or over capacity.
If your student is already attending a school on a transfer, you do not need to renew the request UNLESS your student will be attending a new school next year (ex: if your child is graduating elementary or middle school and you’d like to request a school other than your neighborhood school).
Again, the above process is only for students who reside in the district and who are requesting to attend a school (other than their resident school) within Mukilteo School District next year. Additional information and the release form for attending another school district can be found on the Students and Families tab under Forms.
Sincerely,
Mukilteo School District
