Phase 1 complete: new gyms, fitness room, support spaces and more!

When doors open at Explorer Middle School this fall, students will return to a new physical education center. Phase 1 of a total replacement of the decades-old school campus is now complete, bringing major upgrades to both student and community spaces. Funded by voter-approved bonds in 2020, the project was delivered on time and within budget, despite rising construction costs.

The centerpiece of this phase is a brand-new, stand-alone building that includes a full-size gymnasium, auxiliary gym, fitness room, and support spaces designed to enhance physical education and wellness. The football field and track have also been completely replaced, now featuring synthetic turf and a rubberized track for safer, more durable use. Additional site improvements include new walkways, landscaping, and updated utilities, all contributing to a more welcoming and functional campus.

These spaces aren’t just for students during the school day—they’re also available for scheduled community use, expanding access and strengthening connections between families and the school. The upgraded facilities reflect our commitment to equity, inclusion, and long-term sustainability.

By phasing these large school projects over multiple phases, the district is able to manage its debt load more responsibly. This approach also allows the district to manage large-scale projects while continuing to operate the school, and it provides greater capacity to complete more work at schools across the district, bringing more incremental benefit to our entire community.
