  1. Under normal circumstances, prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medication should be administered before or after school hours.
  2. Per RCW 28A.210.320 Students with life threatening health conditions are required to have prescribed medication at school when they are. This includes, but is not limited to, severe allergies, seizure disorders and diabetes.   3. All medication requires a signed Medication Authorization form signed by a parent/guardian and a licensed health professional. 
  4. All medication must be unexpired and brought in the original, properly labeled container. Controlled substances, like most ADD/ADHD medication, may not be transported by students. Half pill doses need to be delivered already cut. 
  5. Medication orders must be renewed annually or when a change in medication and/or dosage is made. A new Medication Authorization must be completed at the beginning of every school year.
  6. A school nurse often serves more than one school and is not available every day to administer medication.  Other school personnel have been trained to provide required medication when necessary.
  7. All medication will be kept in the school office unless otherwise directed by the licensed health professional and the principal/nurse.
  8. Medication that is not picked up on the last day of school will be disposed of according to Snohomish County law. Schools do not store medication over summer break. 


Over-the-counter topical sunscreen products may be possessed and used by students, parents, and school staff, without a written prescription or note from a licensed health care provider, if the following conditions are met:

  • The product is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration as an over-the-counter sunscreen product
  • If possessed by a student, the product is provided to the student by their parent or guardian.

Students who possess over-the-counter topical sunscreen products that meet the above criteria may carry up to 8 ounces at a time, preferably with the container in a plastic bag. Violations of any conditions placed on the student permitted to carry and/or self-administer his or her own sunscreen products may result in confiscation and termination of that permission, as well as the imposition of discipline when appropriate.

School staff may assist students with the application of sunscreen products in certain circumstances and in the presence of another staff member. The appropriate staff member will take into account the age, maturity, and capability of the student, the need for the application of the sunscreen, and other issues relevant in the specific case, before assisting students with the application of sunscreen products at school or during school-sponsored events. However, staff members are not required to assist students with applying sunscreen.
