About the Mukilteo School District Dual Language Program at Horizon Elementary

A smiling student wearing glasses sits at a desk in a classroom. The Mukilteo School District’s Dual Language Program at Horizon Elementary School is expanding in Fall 2026, creating even more opportunities for students to learn, grow, and thrive in both Spanish and English. This dynamic bilingual program builds strong academic skills while helping students develop confidence, connection, and cultural awareness.

Grades for the 2026-27 school year
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade
The program will grow one grade level every school year.

Our program follows a 90:10 model starting in kindergarten, where most of the day is taught in Spanish with a gradual increase in English each year. By 4th grade, students are learning equally in both languages, setting them up for long-term success in a global world.

Through this program, students don’t just learn a second language, they become bilingual, biliterate, and culturally confident learners who are prepared to succeed in any setting. These outcomes are at the heart of dual language education and open doors to a bright future.

Key Features of Our Dual Language Classrooms

Students regularly work in pairs and small groups, building their speaking and listening skills through meaningful, real-time interactions.

With side-by-side visuals and charts, students deepen their understanding by exploring similarities, including cognates, and transferring knowledge across both languages.

These texts not only support language development but also celebrate the cultures and experiences within our community.
