NOVEMBER 3, 2026, CAPITAL BOND FOR SCHOOLS
A proposed $400 million school construction bond will appear on the
Nov. 3 ballot and includes projects at every school in Mukilteo School District.
At Challenger Elementary School, the proposed projects focus on safety and security, technology infrastructure, and replacement of aging building systems.
CHALLENGER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Challenger Elementary School was built in 1987 with an addition in 2023 to accommodate growth and programs. While the building structure remains in good condition, work is needed to improve safety and security and replace building systems.
2026 CAPITAL BONDS FOR SCHOOLS
The volunteer Capital Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC) evaluates and prioritizes facility needs across the district to help ensure bond funding is focused on the highest-priority projects. For the 2026 bond, the committee recommended $400 million in projects from approximately $975 million in identified needs.
The proposed bond includes the following improvements at Challenger Elementary School:
- Building access controls – Add additional doors to the access control system and install door contacts on all exterior doors, allowing staff to monitor whether any exterior doors are open.
- Integrated door hardware – Install door hardware that can be locked from the inside using a thumb turn that clearly indicates whether it is locked or unlocked. The focus will be on spaces beyond standard classrooms, including the library, gym, common spaces, and offices.
- Technology infrastructure improvements – Modernize aging network infrastructure to support teaching, protect student and district data, and keep essential operations running.
- Replace portable ramps and flooring – Replace aging wood portable ramps with metal ramps and replace flooring in areas where it is in the poorest condition.
