A woman with gray hair and glasses smiles warmly at the camera."After 27 years on the Mukilteo School District Board of Education, Judy Schwab is stepping down. She leaves with the same core belief that first pushed her into public service, that public education is both a personal passion and a democratic necessity.

“Every citizen educated is so important on so many levels,” Schwab said in an interview with The Beacon. She described schools as the foundation of informed voting, civic participation, and community trust.

She believes education isn’t a line item or a political talking point – it’s a public obligation that shapes whether a society can function fairly.

Schwab joined the board at a time she remembers as highly polarized and often dysfunctional. She said she ran because she worried the board had drifted from its real job – setting direction, keeping focus on students, and working collaboratively with the superintendent."
